1990: HEART N SOUL SINGLE LAUNCH

Photographer: Leon Morris

This week we'd love to share a very fond memory: the launch of the Heart n Soul anthem on a 12” record in 1990. We spoke to Heart n Soul Chief Executive and co-founder Mark Williams about the night…

‘Here we are at the legendary music venue Dingwalls in Camden launching the Heart n Soul double A-side. The first side is a club version of ‘Heart n Soul’, the song that we are named after, written by co-founder Pino Frumiento. The second side is the theme song for the BBC magazine show about disability ‘One in Four’, written by Heart n Soul members.

‘In the crowd you can see Dame Joan Ruddock (formerly our local MP), the Mayor for Camden at the time and the actress Judith Jacob, of Eastenders fame. This photo captures how far Heart n Soul had already come after only four years. We had gone from putting on productions at local day centres for adults with disabilities, like the Mulberry Centre, to performing at venues like Dingwalls and writing theme songs for the BBC.’

From left to right you can see Cheryl Lyte, Judith Jacob, the Mayor for Camden, Mandy Lucy, Joan Ruddock MP, Winston Green, Geoffrey Goodall and Pino Frumiento.

You can see a video of the launch party and the artwork for the record to the left. Plus hear the recording of the Heart n Soul anthem along with some of our greatest hits here!

Keep an eye out for 1991 next week!
